As a prospective
writer,
here
are some guidelines for how to style and format your article to
ease the process between writing and publishing. Enjoy your
writing!
Style
Global
Politics is meant for the informed reader, therefore:
As
your article will be published on a website, your article has to
be clearly structured:
-
Say what you’re going to say
-
Say it
-
Say what you’ve said
The
first person should be used with caution: it is encouraged for
sign posting an article (e.g. ‘I will argue…’ or ‘I have shown
that…’ etc.) but not for personal views (e.g. ‘My view is…’ or
‘I don’t believe that…’ etc.). Your argument can be polemical
and controversial, but they are not opinion pieces.
Formatting
1.
Text/paragraph
Please
submit articles written in Verdana font, size 10.
Lines
should be single-spaced. Also, on Microsoft Word, please check
that under Format, Paragraph, on the ‘Indents and Spacing’ tab,
spacing Before and After are both set to zero.
Subtitles should be in bold, with a single line space before the
subsequent paragraph.
New
paragraphs should not be indented, but separated from the
previous paragraph/subtitle by a single line space.
2.
Referencing
Global
Politics Magazine uses the footnote referencing system. All
specific facts should be referenced as well as any ideas or
arguments you draw on substantially in your article. Please
place reference numbers in square brackets within the text,
placed at the end of a sentence where possible, e.g.
…trade
generates the foreign exchange needed to sustain imports, can
increase self-reliance, and provides an outlet for the
productive potential of people in poverty.[16] Today, economic
patterns…
All
references should be listed at the end of the article, using
standard notation, e.g.
[16]
K. Watkins and P. Fowler, Rigged Rules and Double Standards:
trade, globalisation, and the fight against poverty (Oxford,
2002), p. 48.
[17]
Anthony Giddens, The Third Way: The Renewal of Social
Democracy (Cambridge: Polity Press, 1998), pp.145-146.
N.B.
The reference numbers need to be inserted manually. Please do
not submit having used the ‘Insert reference’ function on
Word, as this does not translate correctly when uploaded to the
website, and is a headache to change!
It is
suggested that you use the Word function initially, but replace
with manual numbers before submitting, once the article is
complete.
3.
Summaries
Please
provide the following:
1) A
very short (one sentence) ‘hook’ to accompany the article title
on the Magazine’s front page.
2) A
brief (2-4 sentences) summary of the piece to be placed at the
head of article.
3)
Biography: Articles are accompanied by a brief (1-2 sentences)
bio of the author. Please include where you work/study and
anything else of interest/relevance.
